thirteen point one miles

Listed on my mind as one of the things I would like to accomplish in my life is to run a marathon. With my flat feet and lack of enthusiasm for running, I myself, am surprised that this thing made it on my list at all.

Just a month ago, I started to jog 3 to 4 times a week. With each mile that I run, i learn to bear with the pain that comes with flat feet and revel in having run 2 or 3 miles. My, my, my?! Am I actually enjoying my runs?! I would still rather play with michelle or watch tv but I know that the life of a couch potato doesn’t usually last very long. obesity is one of the biggest problems in america and heart disease is the number 1 killer among women. our family history with both of these makes me a likely candidate but i want to beat my genes and win! I want to live a long, healthy life for my family. It wont happen unless I make choices right now, and I have chosen to run to get fit.

running has become more about being healthy than losing weight. i've only lost maybe 2 lbs but with each run, i feel less bilbil shaking with every hard step. plus i've been eating healthier - always fruits for breakfast, a sensible lunch and dinner. of course i still indulge in snacks in between (lately it's been ding dong from pi), but i no longer feel guilty about them. i don't weigh myself constantly like i used to and my clothes are starting to feel/look better on me. the release of endorphines are working! i just hope my feet can keep up with my excitement!

Now back to the marathon dream. I started to talk to my coworkers about working out and amy, an unlikely marathon runner herself, talked me into joining her for the
nike women’s marathon in October. I have two options: a full marathon (all 26.2 miles) or the half marathon (you do that math!). of course, I wont be able to do the full thing. Come on! I’m a dreamer, but I’m not crazy! In the beginning I said, ‘run a marathon.’ I didn’t say, a full marathon, so this one counts. I’ve been thinking about this over the last couple of days and I’m actually getting excited about the idea. Add to that the fact that you get a Tiffany necklace at the end of the race. What woman wouldn’t love a free necklace from Tiffany’s? I would run that marathon (my half of it) to get that darn necklace! =) I might be crawling by race’s end, but we'll find that one out in october, IF i actually do run. I already imagine Paul and Michelle at the end of the race, cheering me on, beaming with pride that this once lazy bum has completed her first (of many?) marathon. Yey! I’m already grinning from ear to ear just thinking about it.

So before I really start training for this, I’m going to see my doctor, get a physical exam and get my feet checked. i have to be sure that my body will be able to survive this challenge. Having flat feet is not easy. Running becomes painful after only a few minutes. My feet hurt, then my knees, then my back—and I’m not exaggerating! In order to be in the best running condition I could ever be, the doctor is my first stop, then a trainer - which is provided if you sign up to run the marathon.

i have maybe a few more weeks to think about this and then decide. the 2008 marathon isn't open for registration at this time, but amy will let me know as soon as it does. this is her 3rd nike marathon (way to go amy!), and now maybe my first. wow! am i really going to do this? can i really do this?! let's see what happens. =)

*i just visited the website right now and i read that because of the overwhelming success of last year's marathon (they sold out in 3 days), they are going to do a random drawing for participants. i have to register between march 4 and march 18. Random drawing results will be posted on the Nike Women’s Marathon website on April 1st. yikes! i better decide soon!*

restaurant review: bistro luneta

pansin nyo parang kain ako ng kain lately? =) next week may bago ulit akong irereview, farmer brown naman ang pangalan.

chel and t and i decided to give bistro luneta a shot. we've read good things about the place so we decided to drive down to this filipino restaurant in san mateo that serves traditional filipino dishes prepared and presented in unconventional ways.

when we walked into the restaurant, chel's first comment was, 'kahit talaga gawin mong sosyal ang filipino food, may amoy parin.' true that. we can still smell the garlic in the air, but it's not too overpowering. you wont leave the place smelling like the food you eat. kelan ka ba naman nag gisa ng bawang na di nangamoy, di ba?

we ordered one appetizer, the bangus maki, to share between us three. it's milkfish sushi with tomato, onion and salted egg, dipped in tempura batter then deep fried. fried sushi is always a winner in my book. the bangus maki is good because the sweet soy sauce drizzled on top balances the taste between sweet and salty. the exterior of the maki is crisp and the inside is tender. a great play on texture. although this isn't really a filipino dish, it's good to see sushi made from 'filipino' ingredients.

Bangus Maki

for our entree, here is what we ordered:

chel got the bistek luneta: grilled flat iron steak in a citrus soy sauce with garlic mashed potatoes. it was a thick cut of steak, very tender and cooked to a perfect medium. the sauce was too tart. i didn't really taste the citrus, but tasted a lot of reduced balsamic vinegar...really way too sour and tart. the steak without the sauce was better. the mashed potatoes were good too although they could have been more generous with the serving.

Bistek Luneta

t got the kare kare presented beautifully as the picture below shows. it taste like regular kare kare and served with a side of bagoong. the meat is very tender, the sauce is thick and sweet and peanut-y. masarap sya! according to chel, it's the best kare kare she's had that is not made from our household. (naks!) i didn't get a chance to taste the veggies but they looked great to me.

Kare Kare

i ordered the salpicao. whenever i go out to eat at a filipino restaurant and i see that the salpicao is on the menu, i always order it. i LOVE salpicao. there's something about the oily garlicy goodness in this dish that makes my mouth water. i tried the salpicao at kuya's in san bruno but was dissappointed by the taste. but at bistro, ay ang sarap! the best salpicao i've had before this was in malate years and years ago. buti naman ngayon, i found a place to go to when i need my salpicao fix. =) the salpicao was served with blue potato chips which was light and crispy, not salty at all. my only complaint was that the meat in my salpicao was extremely fatty. 1/3 of the meat was actually fat. (kaya malasa talaga) i was tempted to just eat them but i knew i was going to regret that later on so i sliced the fat away and ate the leaner parts. it would have been perfect with a bowl full of rice, tapos isasabaw mo yung mantika ng salpicao. ay yay yay! pero tatlong maliit subo lang ng kanin ang ginawa ko. it was a struggle not to eat more rice pero i have to behave. i ate 2/3s of the chips and was very satisfied with my meal.

Salpicao

for dessert, the 3 of us shared an order of churros manila which is churros with hot Manila chocolate and seasonal fruit. ano yung Manila chocolate? ewan ko rin! but it was good. that one order is perfect for 3 people kasi they give you 6 pieces of churros to dunk in that warm chocolate. (no picture because i just dove into dessert and forgot to snap a photo)

parking is free in the small lot behind the restaurant (you have to go around the block to see it).

over all i give this restaurant a 3 out of 5 spoons. i will go back to this restaurant over boulevard. the food is really good but i do understand why the older, more traditional pinoys would not like it. kasi madalas ang gusto natin e yung sandamakmak na pagkain. pag kumain tayo, galit galit talaga! parang bibitayin na! pero here at bistro, the pace is slower, more relaxed. it's a great place to out on a date. may pagka romantic, madilim, and warm ang environment. you don't feel rushed to finish your meal and pay for your food. while we were there, we only saw two other filipinos eating. the rest were caucasian and chinese.

i really want this place to thrive! it can still use some improvement, like the very sour sauce on the bistek, but they are on to something really good.

so if you're not filipino and would like an introduction to filipino food, you can go here. after you've been acclimated to the taste and smells, go to patio filipino. then if you're feeling like you are ready for the real deal, go to fil-am, kuya's, pampanga's or better yet, go to TSELOGS, the brand new tapsihan set to open in may. this is chel's restaurant and guaranteed to be delicious! yung iba dito recipe ko and others close to her. so in a couple of months i will be writing a very biased restaurant review of tselogs. =)

oatmeal arroz caldo, anyone?

along with jogging, i'm trying to adapt a healthy way of eating. i haven't been eating rice, or if i do, i limit myself to up to 3 spoonfulls. i'm eating more veggies too.

preparing a hot breakfast has been a challenge. an omellette is too much work and the only way i can make it really tasty is if i pile up the 'extras' like cheese, mushrooms, bacon, sausage...so that means i'm piling up the calories also.

that leaves me with oatmeal, which i'm not a big fan of. i normally make my oatmeal with nonfat milk and splenda and i almost always never finish the oatmeal that i prepare. in my head i'm thinking, 'i bet this would make a great oatmeal 'arroz' caldo'. and tonite, i decided to give it a try and it is tasty, you have to try it!

ingredients:

half a cup of dry quaker instant oatmeal (plain of course)

1 cup of chicken broth

1/2 teaspoon of chopped ginger

1/2 teaspoon of toasted garlic bits

1 hard boiled egg

pepper

place the oatmeal, broth and ginger in a bowl and heat for 2 1/2 minutes. add your garlic bits, hard boiled egg and a little bit of pepper and you've got yourself a savory oatmeal breakfast.

i love arroz caldo ('or pospas as it's called in tanza') because it reminds me of cold january mornings and eating pospas at ate chit's little karindirya in front of SAS.

the best part of this dish is that it only has approximately 250 calories per serving. 150 calories from the oatmeal, hardboiled egg is about 70 calories, 10 calories for the fat free chicken broth (swanson is what i used) and a few calories for the garlic and ginger.

for the first time in a long time, i'm looking forward to breakfast! yum-o!!!!

restaurant review; boulevard restaurant

i have had the gift card to this restaurant for almost half a year. hindi namin maisip ni paul kung kelan maganda magpunta until last night when we went out to dinner to celebrate our belated valentine's.

i made reservations for 5:30 pm. we got to the restaurant at around 5:20 and sat at the bar where i ordered one cosmopolitan martini. nung pag pasok namin, there were several people ahead of us and i noticed that the hostess was less than friendly towards them. the people who came looked like they came from a convention and didn't really know what type of restaurant they were going in to. pero kahit na ganon, i think the hostess could have done a better job asking them if they had reservations or whatever it is that hostesses should say in a situation like that. there was not one smile on her face. i mean come on! the restaurant is expensive, but an average american can afford to eat at that place. when it was my turn to let her know that we arrived for our reservation, she still had that semi-rude expression on her face. gusto ko sabihin, 'dude, crack a smile! you're in the hospitality business!' but of course, i didn't. so ayun nga, paul and i sat at the bar to wait until our table was ready. paul's not a big drinker so hindi sya nag order ng drink at the bar. at 5:30 pm sharp, our waiter appeared next to us, took my drink and sat us at our table.

for starters, paul ordered the calamari stuffed crab and i had pheasant and wild mushroom ravioli. i was in a search to find a ravioli dish that will rival the ones i had at jevon's wedding at the four season's hotel. boulevard's ravioli didn't even come close! it was good, but it wasn't great. nothing to write home about.

PHEASANT & WILD MUSHROOM RAVIOLI

Shaved Black Truffles, Parmesan Cheese

paul's calamari was fresh but just ok. it came with tempura of baby leeks and fennel which to me was the highlight of the dish kahit na it's meant to be more of a garnish. the tempura batter was so light and crispy. it make the leeks and fennel oh so tasty.

LOCAL CALAMARI STUFFED with CRAB

Tempura of Baby Leeks & Fennel

Green Garlic Herb Aioli

for our main dish, paul had the duet of angus short ribs while i had the suckling pig which was prepared three ways. i didn't like my dish. maybe i made the mistake of ordering pork when i'm not really into pork. but i was curious as to what suckling pig tastes like (i've never had lechon de leche!) and how it was going to be prepared. i was terribly dissapointed. the pig tasted funky to me. (mapanghi is what i told paul hehehe).

SUCKLING PIG (MANTECA, CA)MULTIPLE PREPARATIONS

Roasted Chop, Slow Cooked Shoulder with Gnocchi Bolognese, Crispy Belly

Pancetta, Asiago & Tomato Stuffed Mushroom, Braised Erbette Chard, Natural Jus

DUET OF ANGUS SHORT RIBS

GRILLED with BOURBON SYRUP & CLASSIC RED WINE BRAISED

Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, Smoked King Trumpet Mushrooms

Mariquita Farms Carrots & Roasted Cipollini Onions

i tried his short ribs and wasn't thrilled about it either. the only part of my dish that i enjoyed was the 3 pieces of gnocchi on my plate and one lonely stuffed mushroom. neither of us finished our entree but i was very pleased with waiter's suggestion of riesling to go with my entree, and an italian red wine (a nebbiolo and barbera varietal) called bricco manzoni that paired so well with paul's dish. since paul doesn't really drink, i finished both glasses but was craving more of that red wine. i'm not really a fan of rieslings since i like my wines more dry. the riesling is too sweet for my taste but it was good nonetheless. but again, the bricco is just heaven! i will look for this wine and buy some to enjoy at home.

like the wines we had, the dessert was also excellent. we shared the sticky toffee pudding with a caramel custard top.

Sticky Toffee Pudding with a Caramel Custard Top

Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream

Candied Kumquats, Almond Biscotti

this was a great finish to an otherwise mediocre dinner. the custard wasn't too sweet, the biscotti was great. the ice cream had a hint of lavander that made you go, 'hmmm, i feel like i'm eating flowers!' and the candied kumquats are like candied calamansi minus the tartness.

overall, i give boulevard a 2 out of 5 spoons. the two spoons are for the the excellent wine list, the great dessert, and the excellent wait staff (except for the hostess). it was good that we only had to pay an extra $30 for our dinner because of our gift card. i wouldn't come back to this restaurant if i had a choice. i would rather walk the extra 50 feet and dine at ozumo's where i am guaranteed to enjoy each bite of whatever i decide to get.

parking is 10 bucks and don't forget to tip your valet.

summary: 2 spoons out of 5; bad hostess, though excellent waiters; excellent wine and dessert.

luke 22:31-33

My daughter started running a few months ago. On Saturday, we took her to Westfield so she can have the whole mall as her playground. She was running all over the place, and had one bad fall and began to cry. I was following her the whole time, and when she fell, I just said, ‘up michelle, get up.’ And she got back on her feet and started running again like nothing happened.

There are times in our walk with Christ that we feel discouraged and wonder whether we should even go on. Minsan kasi, there are problems we face that seem to heavy to carry. Sometimes we think that the Lord is asking too much from us when He asks only what He deserves, and nothing more.

If you feel at you are at odds with your spirit, hear what the lord said to Peter the night he denied he knew Jesus,

Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

"Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. Simon, I've prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start."

Even before you face your problems, Jesus has already prayed for you that your faith may not waiver. God didn’t tell Peter that his faith will not be challenged. God said, ‘I've prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start!’ we will stumble and we will fall, but Jesus has already prayed that we will not give up. Now, the choice is ours whether we want to give it all up, or get back on our feet and be an encouragement to others.

Be like a child who always gets up when they stumble and fall. Kung ang bata nga, tatayo para muling tumakbo, ikaw pa kaya?

Regards,

day 3 of 7

i ate. i was sooo hungry and i couldn't resist the smell of tinapang bangus so i ate a little bit. *sigh*

to compensate for this lack of self control, i jogged 2 miles today and burned about 400 calories. today's jog was not so bad. it actually flew faster than all my other jogs. i guess the key is not to do this everyday since when i do it everyday, i end up resenting each moment my feet hit the threadmill.

tomorrow is another day. sana bukas, mas malabanan ko ang gutom.

by the way i lost 2 lbs.

restaurant review: yank sing

I have been to yank sing at least 4 times but always forget to write a review.

I took my parents to yank sing about 2 weeks ago. My parents are very hard to please when it comes to food. They have two qualifications for a satisfying dining experience: mura at asian food (Filipino, Chinese or Japanese lang dapat…or buffet!) The price of the food always seem to turn them off. Yank sing is a good place to take them because they don’t see the menu and have no idea how much the food costs. So they can eat and enjoy their food without thinking about the money that each bite drains out of the pocket.

Yank sing is a dim sum restaurant. The dim sum are placed in carts that the waiters walk all around the restaurant and offer to patrons--much like how it’s done in hong kong. The variety is great. Each dim sum I’ve tried was good. We ordered fried rice also since my parents won’t enjoy lunch without rice. We had too much dim sum that I wasn’t able to keep track of all their names, but trust me, they were all good!

My family loves dim sum. There’s a hole in the wall dim sum restaurant about 2 miles from where we live. It’s your typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant - suspiciously unclean (but that’s what we would call character!). While we enjoy their dim sum for being filling and affordable, yank sing takes the food to a different level. The place is not stuffy. It’s actually relaxed and noisy. Michelle wasn’t given dirty looks for screaming “abadada!” because the other diners hardly heard her. (for the definition of abadada see blog entitled ‘michelle-isms part 1’). They actually gave her a magna doodle to play with while in the restaurant. She politely ignored the toy and stuck to her abadada.

It’s easy to stuff yourself silly when eating here. Because the food never sits on your table for too long and one serving of dim sum is usually just 4 pieces. The dim sum carts passes by every minute so it’s easy to ask for another helping. If the cart that passes by doesn’t have the food you are looking for, simply tell the waiter and she will page for it to be brought promptly to your table.

Service is fast and friendly. the restaurant validates parking for the garage downstair so get your ticket validated! We were in the restaurant for only a little over an hour and parking was $20! With validation, parking was free. For 5 adults, we paid close to $200 including tax and a generous tip. I thought my parents were going to have a heart attack when they saw the bill (a mistake on the waiter’s part for showing them the bill). But my mom said, ‘hindi na masama. Ok lang na ganyan ka mahal, masarap naman at nagustuhan namin yung food.’ Aba! ?Winner!

day 2 of 7

'ang luwag luwag naman ng pantalon mo!' says charmagne, our resident fashionista and make up artist.

(a wide smile on my face) 'oo nga e!' sagot ko naman.

this short conversation forced me to make a trip to nordstrom rack and buy some clothes (and shoes!). i feel happy the clothes i tried on actually looked good on me (kaya nag over spend!). im feeling lighter and i can't wait for the day 7 to come!

so i had a few spoonfuls of solid food! so what? ok na yun. hindi ko ikakataba yung ilang subo na yon.

i am feeling hungry though. really hungry. haaay! kung dati, puro food na yung naisip ko, lalo na ngayon. but it's mind over matter. kaya ko to! =)

boo jie - tubig

puto - pusod

ngiyaw ngiyaw - pusa or any member of the feline family

dadi - rubber ducky, or a duck

boy - ball

burr - bird

flower - flowi

uhn gie - dog or doggy; when she sees a dog, she goes, 'uhn gie! uhn gie!' tapos yung kamay nya e parang nag kacrumple ng paper (palad facing up) na parang nanggigigil sya na natutuwa dun sa aso

day 1 of 7

today is day 1 of my nth attempt at master cleanse, a.k.a. the lemonade diet.

i will update this blog to encourage myself to continue this cleansing diet. it should be for at least 10 days but i don't want to reschedule my valentine's date with the husband so i shortened this to 7 days instead of 10.

i have lost 4 lbs before when i did this diet for 5 days. that was when i cheated and ate dinner each night. i just could not completely say no to solid food!

today, aside from a few pieces of ruffles potato chips, i think i'm doing much better. and i plan on sticking to it from here on out! no more cheating!

what is the master cleanse? for more information visit http://www.thelemonadediet.com/

beyonce went on this diet to shed off extra lbs for her dreamgirls role. other actors and athletes use this diet when they want fast results. i need fast results myself since our 'biggest loser' challenge at work officially ends on march 4--which means if i don't place at least 3rd place, it's bye bye $200!!!!! i only have about 3 weeks to lose weight. after 7 days, it's back on this diet again until the 4th. while i have seen results when i jog as i have jogged almost everyday last week, it's not fast enough. i'm going to jog/brisk walk later today after playtime with my daughter. the white sand beaches of the bahamas should also be an incentive. we booked another cruise, this time to nassau, coco cay, and key west. haaaay! why did i wait until the last minute to get serious with this?!

wish me luck!

heath ledger's untimely death

i'm not a big fan, but i find him to be very good looking, and he can really act. i don't remember seeing any of his other movies except for the patriot where i think he did a fine job.

it's been all over the news and i read all the stories on cnn and msnbc. it makes me sad that such a young guy would die so unexpectedly. it brought back memories of rico yan's passing, another untimely death.

i feel sad for michelle williams and their daughter matilda. i can't imagine how painful it must be for them. even if their relationship didn't work out, it is still heartbreaking when you find out that your daughter will never really know her father. i pray that they will be comforted in this very trying time.

why do so many actors die this way? gano ba talaga kahirap maging artista? naku, kung ganyan ng ganyan, itu-turn down ko na ang mga offers sa akin! bwahahaha!

happy birthday rodney boy!

hehe bigla ko lang naalala that we call you rodney boy in high school courtesy of beteng boy!

sometimes i miss the days we were in high school - of course minus all the drama! =)

i am so blessed to have a cousin and a friend like you. i am proud that my closest friends are still around. tipong, hanggang sa pumiti na talaga ang mga buhok natin, (nauna na sa pagputi ang buhok ko!), tayo tayo parin ang magkakasama.

i love you rod! God bless you and those that you love! mwah!

michelle-isms part 1

Kids say the funniest things and my daughter is no exception. michelle began talking earlier than other kids. madami na sya nsasabi. Here is a list of some of the words she says. I will give periodic updates habang nadadagdagan ang sinasabi nya.

Wowo - lolo. Pretty standard language for kids her age.

Wa, Uwa – lola. Again pretty easy to understand.

Nina – no, not the singer but this is her version of ninang. Ninongs sometimes gets called nina also.

Pssss – not peas. She doesn’t like peas nor is it her word for urine. Psss is grapes

Apoy - apple

Epi – airplane

Enet - mainit

Doder – her favorite breakfast treat, yogurt

Papay - tinapay

Pampi – pampers

Wowowee – Willy Revillame or the tv show

Uhm dada – (Eat Bulaga!) Joey de leon or Vic Sotto or kahit sino sa hosts ng eat bulaga

Taktak – Eat bulaga ulit

Uhm bee – jobie, charmagne’s pet Pomeranian

Ojens - orange

Dida – toothbrush. No matter how many times we tell her that it’s called tooth brush…she still calls it dida. Pag binagalan namin ang pag sabi to stress the syllables, she can say it. But as soon as she says it on her own and when she sees her toothbrush, it’s dida all over again.

Abadi – her favorite blanky/stuffed animal. She gave this name to her security blanket. We can NEVER leave home with it as she gets VERY UPSET when it’s away from her for long periods of time

Mamay – Mickey mouse. I don’t even know how she came up with mamay! Mickey was Iky when she first began speaking. Now it has transformed into Mamay! I really don’t know how!

Abadada – kutsara. When she eats at the dinner table, she will point to the rack where we keep the spoons and forks and yell, “abadada! Abadada!” she wont stop hanggat hindi mo binibigyan ng kutsara.

Baboon – lobo or balloon

Jigs – legs. Pag nakita nya ang legs ng kahit sino (which is rare dahil winter dito), she will say, ‘wow, jigs!” (wow legs!)

Haninaw – ang ginaw. With matching kinikilig kilig pa dahil giniginaw.

Tap! – stop! Pag kinikiliti mo, she will say, “tap!” to make you stop…then you do it all over again and she says it all over again.

Peeees – as opposed to pssss which has a longer s sound. Peees with the longer E sound is, please.

Marami pa syang nasasabi, she can say fish, draw, daddy, mommy, banana, dahan-dahan, baba, upo, shoes, socks, baby, nanay, tatay, car, at marami pang iba. She knows how to say ‘please’ and she says it in a very malambing way and cocks her head to the side for maximum effect. I found few adults who are able to resist when she says please. She knows how to say no, and answers most questions with no.

Sample:

“Michelle kain ka pa ng rice.” -- adults
“No!” – michelle

“Michelle cleaning time na. put away your toys.” -- adult
“No!” -- michelle

“baba! Baba!” (she wants to go down the stairs or down from her chair. I just remembered, baba is also taas sa kanya)-- michelle
“peeeees!” – michelle
“no!” – now it’s the adult’s turn to say no

Marami pa akong maidadagdag ditto as I remember kung ano ang mga sinasabi nya.
